Anancy & Tacuma Stories

Anancy and the Mango Tree 🕷️🥭

One hot Jamaican afternoon, Anancy was walking down a country road when he spotted the biggest mango tree he had ever seen.

The branches were heavy with sweet, ripe mangoes.

“Lawd! Today is my lucky day!” Anancy said, rubbing his belly.

But there was one problem—the mangoes were too high.

Just then, Tacuma came walking by.

“Tacuma, my good friend,” Anancy called. “Climb the tree and shake down some mangoes. We’ll share them half and half.”

Tacuma climbed up and started shaking the branches.

Mangoes fell everywhere!

Anancy quickly gathered them into his bag. But instead of waiting for Tacuma, he grabbed the bag and ran.

“ANANCY!” Tacuma shouted.

Anancy laughed as he ran—until he tripped over a tree root.

BAM!

The bag flew open, and mangoes rolled everywhere.

Tacuma climbed down, picked up one mango, and smiled.

“Anancy, sometimes when yuh want everything for yourself… yuh end up with nothing.”

Anancy looked at the empty bag and sighed.

“Alright, Tacuma. Half and half.”

And under the mango tree, the two friends sat together, eating mangoes and laughing.

Moral: What tastes good alone tastes even better when shared.

One hot afternoon in Jamaica, Anancy was walking down a dusty country road when he heard something strange coming from beneath an old mango tree.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Anancy stopped.

“Eh-eh! Who playing drum inna bush this time of day?”

He followed the sound and found a beautiful little drum sitting beneath the tree. Painted around its sides were the colors black, green, and gold.

Just then, Tacuma came walking up the road.

“Anancy, leave that drum alone,” Tacuma warned. “Mi hear seh that drum is special. It only plays when somebody tells the truth.”

Anancy smiled.

“Truth? Tacuma, everybody know Anancy is the most honest man in Jamaica!”

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The drum started beating all by itself.

Tacuma folded his arms. “Anancy… the drum just catch yuh already.”

Anancy frowned.

“Alright, alright. Maybe mi tell one likkle lie.”

The drum went quiet.

Anancy’s eyes grew wide.

He quickly realized that the drum could tell when someone was being truthful.

But instead of leaving it alone, Anancy got an idea.

“If this drum can tell truth from lie, mi can carry it to the village and make some money!”

So Anancy carried the drum into town and gathered everyone around.

“Come one, come all! For just one dollar, the magical drum will tell whether you are speaking the truth!”

Soon there was a long line.

Then Tacuma stepped forward.

“Anancy,” he said, “did this drum really belong to you?”

Anancy looked around at all the people holding their money.

“Of course it belong to me!”

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The drum beat so loudly that everybody jumped.

Tacuma smiled.

“Anancy, did you find it under the old mango tree?”

Anancy swallowed.

“No.”

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The whole village burst out laughing.

Finally, Anancy hung his head.

“Alright! Mi find the drum under the mango tree, and mi was trying to make a likkle money from it.”

The drum became completely silent.

Tacuma laughed and put his arm around Anancy.

“See deh? Sometimes the truth is easier.”

Anancy picked up the drum and started walking back toward the mango tree.

“Maybe so,” he muttered. “But the truth don’t pay as good!”

From behind him came one final sound:

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

And the whole village laughed again.
